2000-D Maryland State Quarter

On the branch to the right, just after the second acorn cluster when scrolling up the branch bottom to top, the branch appears to get much thicker and a lot of the leaves have 2 edges on the left side past that point... initially I thought it just either was made using a worn out die or it has mechanical doubling but check out the S of PLURIBUS. I can see 2 pretty distinct curls on the S... could that be doubled? Or is this an optical illusion perhaps created by the coin not being seated properly when struck?
