SPP Ottawa => hey, how is the Geology biz treatin' lately? (long time, no hear) ... curious, I only started collecting/noticing these $20-for-$20 coins a couple of years ago ... how many are in the series?
Don't want to hijack this topic, but many of these can be had at face at about 1,000 major post offices in France. Tricky though: Usually only one denomination or two can be had at face ... Christian
Very nice set, whiz! I have a number of them also; for some reason, I really, really like the design of the canoe coin.
I've always wanted to drive to Newfoundland/Labrador. I'm in upstate NY, so it's not an impossible voyage. Worth going?
A friend, from another forum, sent me this for Christmas. I didn't realize the program existed. The US Mint should try........er, never mind.......
But Americans may be unhappy about having QEII on their coins. Some mints in the world will issue a whole lot of different coins, hoping that casual collectors will buy this or that piece or series. Others issue a few per year only, hoping that people want to be "complete". Not necessarily a paradigm shift, but different approaches ... Christian
Definitively worth the trip... but it really depends on what you're after. If you're driving, you'll get off the ferry on the west coast. The west coast is all about natural beauty and outdoor activities, and there's no big population centers, per say. It's an 8 to 9 hour drive to get the the capital (St. John's) on the east coast, but that's where all the history is... although some would disagree. But you don't make a trip to Newfoundland without visiting St. John's!
Yes, you do I much prefer Gros Morne over St. John's... L'anse Aux Meadows is beautiful too... I miss visiting Newfoundland
If you like nature there are no better places then Gros Morne! L'anse Aux Meadows is a little harder to get to, but worth the trip if you have any interest in Viking history. I'm a "city boy" myself (and I use that term loosely because there's only about 200,000 of us here) and live in the heart of downtown St. John's, not 200 feet from the location of the first British fort in the city. There's nothing left of it now, and they built a huge musem on top of it, but you can still see a corner of the old fort on the museum grounds. St. John's is the oldest city in North America, "discovered" in 1497 and settled not much later.
200,000 people was a huge city (only a few cities in the world), when the word city was first used. So, technically, you are a 'city boy' L'anse Aux Meadows is, sadly, hard to get to... but you get to enjoy the beauty of Newfieville (family nickname) on the way ... Hope to go back to Newfoundland this summer... I love the Gros Morne area (plus the beautiful hike... saw moose last time (although it is very windy at the top)) and haven't been in about a year now
I was born and raised on the West Coast (Vancouver Island) => the nicest place that I've seen "yet" ... => However, I haven't been further east than Quebec, so I still need to make at least one trip further and tour the Maritimes (my wife is an avid Bruins fan, so we also want to dip-down into Maine, Mass., etc) ...... yes, I've heard some great things from people who have visited Newfoundland and the Maritimes (we'll just have to see if it's as gorgeous as my West Coast)
Steve, The Maritimes is much like Salt Spring Island, welcoming, natural and full of people who are very, very nice to strangers
Pot-smoking, draft-dodgers? .... sounds awesome!! => ahahaha => no offense, Salts Spring Islanders (as a kid, I used to love goin' on soccer road-trips over to your cool, little island) Salute!!
Always fancied visiting the Maritimes. Anyone remember 'Ann of Green Gables'? Marvelous PBS production and my only foray (albeit fantasy) into a part of Canada that I find most interesting........
Funny, I've been half way round the world on business many times, but I have yet to make any further west then Ontario in my own country. I think I'll skip the few provinces in between, but I definitely want to visit the "cool" part of Canada (BC) one of these days, and check out Molly's Reach!
BC is absolutely gorgeous ... driving through the Rockies and camping and/or hitting a couple of the Ritzy Coast Hotels (Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise) => it doesn't get any better than that (world class sights and world class hotels) Vancouver itself is a super fun and cool city ... but Vancouver Island (Victoria, Sydney, Sooke, Nanimo, Campbell River, Toffino) ... man, if you like cool little cities on the ocean, then you've found a home!! ... I've made myself homesick!! Here is the view from my Dad's house (he built it himself and has been living in it for the past 60 years ... he just turned 89 years old!!) This is looking from my dad's balcony over towards Mount Baker in Washington State ... "priceless"
