Got 2 new Flavians at the Torex coin show last week. Just getting around to posting them here. I've always wanted a Domitian wolf and twin denarius but most are pretty rough and worn. This one is no exception but it is better than average. It'll do for now. Rated as common in RIC they're actually not that easy to find.

    RIC 961 Domitian denarius
    CAESAR AVG F DOMITIANVS

    Rome, 77-78 AD

    3.45g

    RIC 961 (C2)

    Ex-Calgary Coin

And I've always loved big Imperial portraits. Usually I go for Cistophoric teradrachms because of their fine style and silver. This time I went for a sestertius ot Vespasian. It has a great portrait, lovely patina and ex-CNG. Again rated common in RIC but not so easy to find in good condition.

    RIC 247 Vespasian sestertius

    SC in field

    RIC 247 (C2)

Kraay counted 12 reverse dies used for this obverse type.

    Ex-CNG; Ex-Calgary Coin

Some old cleaning scratches in fields, nicer in hand.

I have a few more Flavians on the way and a Taras didrachm. Will post those when they arrive.

I'm new around here. Was just referred to this forum by a coin enthusiast on Facebook.

Of your two new coins the Domitian is by far the more common. Do you collect Flavians?

I like them both, but am partial to the denarius. Nothing like the story of the twins and she-wolf.

    Thanks guys

I mostly spend my time at Forum but it's a bit more of a relaxed atmosphere here. Yes, I collect Flavians, Southern Italian and coins of Antony with a few others thrown in but mostly Flavians...

    +1 on seeing your coins!

    Flavian lovers, come ye forth!
I'm nearing completion on a work on Vespasian and happy to help if you have any tough coins (or are just curious). I've a lot of data on Domitian too for that matter.

As for me posting pics of my coins, naaah. I don't have many, the ones I do have aren't especially interesting and I've a feeling my collection style (get one of each emperor) is bound to roll people's eyes with boredom :)

Here is an interesting coin of Vespasian. It is the RIC II Part 1 reference coin. There are now 2 known. @David Atherton owns the other one. What makes this coin interesting is that the portrait is bare headed. There is only one other left facing bare headed type for Vespasian and that is RIC 853.

Oh very nice indeed! Your friend must have the one sold by Gemini a few years ago then.

However, there's also at least one aureus, also Pax, with bare head left. So that makes three. But still, no doubt about it this is a very special piece.

*Not sure what the policy here is on linking to external sites but will assume it's frowned upon so if you want me to I can fetch the aureus image and upload.
