I recently picked up this proof 2 mark piece from Stuttgart. I couldn’t resist a 100+ year old proof silver coin for less than a hundred bucks, even if it shows a bit of handling. I’m trying to find the mintage figures to find out how rare it really is but not having any luck. I’m even seeing conflicting numbers from different sources for the total year mintage, one is in the 5k range and another in the hundreds of thousands. Does anyone have an accurate reference for this? (Sellers photos)
Looking on line on the NGC Guide (from Krause, correct?) it is not listed. I don’t have the actual book.
I looked in 3 different books I have (2 in German, and Krause) and none gave a mintage for the proof issue. A lot of the Germans coins of the period had a common date proof and it seems that this one did. So I am not sure how they label it 1914 PF
My catalog (Grosser Deutscher Münzkatalog 2018 ed) lists 315962 examples struck for the 1914 2-Mark for Württemberg. It does not mention proof strikes (PP) for this year. Only for the year 1906 (200 ex.)
Total Graded by NGC In PF 61: 1 In Higher Grades: 12 Going on the population, it's definitely a scarce coin. Great pick up!
This is the other reference I found from numista.com. It shows wildly differing mintages for 1913 and 1914. Not sure which to believe?
The Jaeger catalog lists the 200 proof pieces dated 1906 too, but also says that proof pieces are known from every year. By the way, this "Mint: Freudenstadt" is nonsense of course. Stuttgart. Christian
