So I've been buying boxes of pennies from the bank to search for wheats, and in the process I've come into possesion of 2 full boxes of 2017 P pennies. Just curious what you would do with them. Might it possibly be worth keeping one? Is it poor etiquette to request a bank to trade one of them for a different box which hopefully contains circulated coins?
It's been my experience that if you buy boxes from the bank, you'll occassionally get entire boxes of new releases. I've had at least 3 boxes of 2017P cents. I go ahead and break them up looking for blank planchets and the like but 99.99999% of them simply go into my "deposit" bag for recycling.
I dump them. I have 2 solid 17P boxes in my hall right now that are waiting to be unwrapped and dumped. Unfortunately, if you get boxes, you will eventually end up getting new solid date boxes. About this time of year is when I start seeing the solid current year boxes. I usually go through a few random rolls to see if there are any interesting things and then dump the rest. I HATE SHIELD CENTS
I would put away 4 rolls or so for your GGG Grandkids. If it was feb last year you could have a nice little extra from flebay! Did they do away with P for 18?
They are selling for crazy high prices right now. People are hoarding them. I have seen them at a coin show for $5.00 per roll. Look at Ebay...some people are asking really high prices and it is crazy.
So you think its worth the possibility of something interesting to open them? I was thinking it'd be easier to just exchange the unopened box for 25 dollars cash, or a different (hopefully circulated) box. I'm not a fan of shield pennies either frog
Like go to walmart and buy something for 50 bucks with two boxes of pennies to be difficult? That does sound kinda fun...
I haven't seen anything worthwhile in the 17s to merit keeping/looking through them. I'd try to exchange the box for some circulated stuff.
Cool thanks for the advise. I just don't want to sour my relationship with my bank if changing box for box is frowned upon.
As Duane said in post #8, they are being hoarded. I am on the West Coast and looked for them until July from circulation...not one. My wife got tired of listening to me complain and bought 2 rolls from a numismatic service in the Chicago area, 10 bucks. I found my first 17-P from circulation in Sept. I don't keep any more of them since then for several reasons: A large percentage of my 100 have hairline die cracks on both sides making for a very common error. And, with so many being hoarded there will be a flood of them 50 Years from now. And, if mine have errors, everyone else is finding theirs with errors. They are turning out to be another crappy zincoln. If I were you I would search for the best non- error coin out of each roll. But if you have a proof of one, save yourself the arduous task and release them back into general population. There is always the chance of an undiscovered doubled die in those rolls too... Spark
I received a box of very new looking presidential dollars (not mint rolls). I deposited them and received the same box back from a different bank a couple months later. I deposited them again. I never bothered to search the rolls.
