Went to the Torex show today in Toronto and picked up 3 new coins. A rare Domitian RIC 393: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-141271 A common Domitian RIC 741: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-141270 And an incuse Lucanian drachm from Sybaris. Chipped but Sweet! http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-141272 Details in my gallery...
Jay, wonderful pickups! I love the Domitians. I could not make the show this time, but I did participate in the auction.
There were only 2 lots that I found, neither of them worth a bid imho. They did however, have a few medieval gold pieces. I was quite surprised that the bidding did not go higher for these. I picked up a very nice Francis I gold ecu.
Thanks guys. David, It was totally misattributed! Came from a large collection. I bought it on style and not remembering ever seeing IMP XI COS XI . It wasn't til I got home I was able to confirm my suspicion it was a rare issue. All three coins were very reasonably priced.
That comes as no surprise. Over half of the Domitian Minervas I come across are misattributed. Your instincts paid off!
The two Domitians have great style, and I would have also bought the drachm of Sybaris despite the chipped flan. It has excellent detail and character. Well done!
