I used to go to many coin shows, local, regional and national. I went though a lot of coins. I also got to know the dealers who had the type of coins I like. All of this takes time and dedication, but if you enjoy it, it doesn’t seem like work.

When I built a set of Two Cent Pieces in EF (all with a strong “WE”) I was working in Boston, Bromfield Street, which was just off the main shopping district, was the home for five or six coin dealers, including JJ Teaparty and Worthy Coin, who ran a bid wall like you have never seen. I would go coin shopping on my lunch breaks. I knew a group of young collectors (I was in my early 30s.), and we learned a lot from each other.

If you lived out in country, as I did when I was a child and a teenager, there was not a lot of ways to find coins unless you ran into the occasional family hoard that they were willing to sell. I had to got to “the big city,” Philadelphia, to find the really good coins.
