Can maybe make out an 8 as the last digit, but even then it looks like it would be turned significantly?

Your third pic does seem to indicate an 8 as the final didgit

 

True..and it is to far to the right away from the date.
I still say 1911. I stared at it long enough to get that date

 

I noted the apparent relationship to the rim but the coin is angled in the pic so that apparent distance to the rim could be greater viewed strait on

 

Hmm now I see what you were seeing

 

The coin is laying on a flat surface with a tiny loop over it, that might be why it seems angled.

 

So in summary, I will never know it's true date?

 

well you could but you in the process would damage the coin

 

Rub a pencil on a sheet of paperto get some graphite powder
Hold a hin sheet of white paper over the coin.
Rub the graphite with your finger then rub the paper over the date area
Might work for

 

May be too deep

 

I think I got it...it looks to be '46
