Hi all. I've long had interest in 19th century proof coinage but for a long time they were out of my budget. I saw this coin (my profile picture) at a good price on instagram a few months ago and barely claimed it by just a couple of seconds. The post didn't even last 5 minutes. I paid $600. PCGS has PR62 examples on the price guide at $850. Even better is the toning, especially on the reverse. Blue and purple are pretty popular colors, and they really pop in good lighting. Unfortunately, the obverse appears to be that of a 'slider', but even still, I am happy. 1891 was the last year of the Seated Liberty coinage, and the proof quarter above is one of 600 minted, which is pretty low for the type. Factor in the eye appeal, and I think I had a big win Please share your 19th century proof coins here!
Very lovely, Ron. I think the 1891 really stands out from the other two you have shared. I also really like the GIF format you have, showing the coin in various lighting. Thanks for sharing.
Early in the thread, but not too early to drop my jaw. One day I hope to have something like my avatar!
Who like a little extra juice? Whats in the denticals huh? The 91 ms has a mpd wanta bet struck with proof dies??
hmm, I don't see anything in the denticles but I should take a bit to research.. You have my curiosity piqued.
I have a few I can offer toward this venture. Who doesn't love a dripping wet proof coin?... Sadly, I admittedly need to work on the coin photos I have at work... 1873 Half Dime PR64CAM 1885 Thrickle PR66
Very nice, Randy. I like the 3 cent a lot, I've thought about picking up a proof one, but I haven't had one fall into my lap... yet The half dime is very very cool as well. Is that a crack off of the O in OF or a hair on your slab? Darned pets LOL!
I debated sharing this to the world coins board, but chose not too since I thought we would get more eyes here. I really like that, I didn't know Haiti had proof coins in that era. I've thought about dropping money on some early Haitian coins, but the really early stuff from shortly after the revolution looks very expensive. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting, I looked under the scope but I'm not seeing the MPD. Which is unfortunate! Here is an image.
Oh yeah.... My big dog is a major shedder and loves to leave his mark throughout my collection. I keep my safe dry so it tends to up the static electricity and when I pull slabs out, I can see dog hair rising up out of the carpet to adhere itself to my slabs!
They can be but this one is not. It's over-graded IMO which helped make it affordable. I'm pretty sure these were minted in Great Britain.
I really like the 19th century proofs. Unlike some, I don't have any aversion to including them in my type and date sets.
