One just sold at The Bay for $53.22 (plus $2.99 shipping). I can tell you my thinking. This set looked more key (especially since it included New York) back when it seemed reasonable for folks to collect all the statehood quarters, back when folks thought that was a special deal and they would do all 50 and be done. I know a lot of folks who did not collect coins, but were excited by that and started trying to get all the quarters and in the best conditions. Then they added DC and territories. Then they decided to milk it and do more statehood quarters and call it "America the Beautiful." But I do not know anyone who cared at that point, and I think it damaged enthusiasm for collecting the original statehood quarters, too. I know folks who gave up on the silver proof sets once the mint continued with America the Beautiful. Probably many folks started dumping the sets they already had, too. Too much is not good for collecting. IMO, they might be embarking down the same path with ASEs. Too many different ones each year at too high a price makes it harder and harder for folks to afford to collect them all. So then . . . what's the point of collecting any? From a collector's standpoint, I really wish that they would just go back to one business strike true bullion coin and one proof coin each year and be done with it.
