More likely grease filled die. You'd have to polish preeeeettttyyy hard to completly get rid of something that deep on the die.

They are interesting, I found a 200 D Lincoln Today.
    I haven't seen the Y before.
A struck through can happen anywhere on the coin

Hi, that's a nice find on the 200 D.I have to see if there's any information on missing letters.
    Thanks for checking it out.

Things like these, take the right buyer, otherwise they just get put in a 2*2 flip.

That beats mine. My "oldest" Lincoln Cent is from 974.

Paddyman, what's your opinion on how this could have happened?

After some time of strike usage the Die gets worn and dirty. After a few wipes from a Mint employee with a dirty rag on the Die some of the incused letters or numbers get debris into them. After a few times of this happening the grease or debris will be compacted into the incused area. On your coin it was the letter Y.. When the Die struck the Cent the letter Y was not formed properly.. and probably on hundreds of other Cents until the Die was replaced.

Its never only 1, the ultimate of a struck through coin is to find the struck thru dropped element.
