1999 D nickel. Weighs 4.3g. I can’t figure out what’s going on with it

    Well, okay then. It's a not so special nickel do some experimenting, earn and learn your way. In the end you still have a nickel, spend it. Good luck.

    ED but appears to maybe have a substances on it. Like @Oldhoopster said, try cleaning it to see what happens. I'd soak it for a couple of days in 100% pure acetone to see if the substance comes off. Let us know the results if you do try cleaning it.
    BTW, I'd triple check the scale. For it to come up with two different readings on the same coin, I'd say it needs to be calibrated.

    I weighed 2 different nickels many times and hit the tear button to recalibrate. And it’s still at 4.3 the lowest it read is 4.1. That was before I calibrated it.

So since I’m a painter I used lacquer thinner and this was the result.
