The Eagle was struck on a planchet intended for a commemorative dollar. It has no reeds and has a slightly smaller diameter and weight than a correct Silver Eagle. The story says that there may be more out there in unopened monster boxes and unsearched original rolls.
According to the article, West Point was striking Black Revolutionary War Patriots Silver Dollars and Robert F. Kennedy Silver Dollars at the same time as the ASE.
