I posted a quarter earlier not sure if it was missing Clad or what. This penny you can feel the difference. Is this done in the mint ?
Looks like the Copper plating was affected. Only Quarters, Dimes and Halves have Clad layers. Cents minted after mid 1982 have a Copper plating which is added on a Zinc core using a different process.
So how does this just chip off after its minted and out in circulation. Looking at the pics something was going on at the mint. But what? Backsides all bunched up in spots too
The copper w chipped off after it left the mint? It's not from being worn or the environment. Just wondering if that's possible since it's a newer coins and they are no where as good as the copper. That's for sure
When it receives Environmental Damage it can occur. I have been metal detecting for about 8 years now and I have found hundreds of Copper plated zinc Cents with plating damage such as yours because of exposure to saltwater and chemicals.
