They are roughly about the same in terms of population. They are roughly about the same in terms of population, (the 84 have been found more of at this point but). The 97 is not near as big or sought after as the 84 - some thought the 97 is not truly a doublED die at first but I always did think it was. The 84 is massive though - there are really not in the same league as far as I can see. In BU the 97 is a $100 or so coin the 84 is a $300+ coin. I've owned both and the 84 is some coin, the 97 is to but just not as big.
Absolutely! Now to get technical. For kicks, There are either a few die marriages or there are different die states of the reverse die on these. Does your coin have a die chip on the upper left corner of the Memorial building on the reverse? It will look like a small raised blob of metal. Thanks, Bill
Hi, Here's a piece of numismatic trivia that no one knows about A bunch of years ago, and for a few years, the "Redbook" showed a picture of an ear on the 1997 Doubled Ear cent and labeled it as the 1984 Doubled Ear. I was the guy that contacted Tom DeLorey who was editing at the time and pointed that out From that year onward, the picture was corrected. So, I actually contributed to the Rebook but I'll never be noted for it All my older Redbooks are in the room where my cats are sleeping right now so I am not going to fuss around looking for the years. If someone has old editions of the Redbook, look through the cent section and you will at some point see the incorrect picture for two or three years straight and then it's fixed As a side note, the 1997 doubled ear cent has still not been listed in the "Redbook" although the picture of the coin was in the book for two or three years Have Fun, Bill
Hi Thanks, The chip or blob doesn't indicate anything about the obverse which of course is the Doubled Ear. I was curious because I have three or four different looks to the reverse dies on coins that I have. One has no die chip, one has a die chip up high on the left side of the memorial and one has a chip down low on the memorial building. It would appear that at least two and maybe three reverse dies were paired with doubled ear obverse dies. Thanks for looking, Bill
