It means the high jump in an MS69 grade are going for 200-300, but those were old auctions. The proof coins graded PR69DCAM are going for around 40 dollars. The two coin sets I have are proof - back then I usually did not buy uncirculated coins.
I forgot to mention that from just glancing at the pictures(and how the light reflected) posted I assumed your coins were proof coins.
There's more to it than that though Mark, all of the 2 coin sets contained 2 one dollar coins. None of them mixed a dollar and a half dollar. At least none of them I can find in any book did. So where did that case come from ? Both the half dollar and the dollar fit exactly. I'm beginning to wonder if the case is from another year and someone just substituted the coins and COA's.
All of the pieces to the set match perfectly. The color scheme is the same through out the entire thing and the set says Atlanta Centennial Olympic games on it. Mark, mine are Proof coins. so that means they are the "PR69DCAM" grade and they go for about $40?
I did a search on Ebay and found this one... http://cgi.ebay.com/1996-Olympic-At...0QQihZ019QQcategoryZ41108QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Speedy
What I thought was someone made the set - just like you. So when I replied yes it was from looking at my 2 coin sets which both have one COA and two proof dollar coins. And after seeing Speedy's post I am beggining to think the mint did release them that way. I do not remember that, all I remember was getting frustrated trying to figure out which coins I had and did not have. At that time I was still ordering from the mint by mail.
Hey guys, I realize this is an extremely old post and everything, but I was hoping someone would still reply and maybe help me out. Anyway, I stumbled across this thread while trying to find more information about the same set of Atlanta Olympic coins that has been so mysterious to you guys, as well as me. I haven't been able to find any information on the set itself, only the two coins individually. I have the same set this thread was started about, with the dollar high jump coin, and the half dollar swimmer coin, in the box, with both authentication slips. Thing is, my sister also has the set too, and they were given to us by our parents in '96, and were purchased from a bank in North Carolina. While reading this whole post, it struck me as odd that a bank would sell a box set that appears to have been produced by someone other than the US Mint. I'm gonna take them to a coin shop and see if ANYONE can find some information on this, because regardless of whether it came from the US Mint or not, it DID come from somewhere. If anyone has found any more information on this since the last post in '07 (long time ago) please let me know. Thanks guys!
I'm also trying to find out some information about these coins. My girlfriend and I were going through some stuff she has and we ran across this coin set exactly as has been described with the high jump dollar and the swimming half dollar with two separate COAs. Her ex-husband actually purchased this set but I'm not sure where. They both lived in Kansas when they purchased the set. I thought that she might be able to get more money since interest in the Olympics is high at this time. If we have to we can sell the coins individually but I'm interested in why the coin experts haven't seen these around especially since there have been several reports on them. I'll check back and see if you find out anything and I'll post too if I learn anything.
Is there anyway that anyone knew the complete Atlanta Olympics final mintage according to special package option. Like how many sets sold for 2 coins set, 4 coins set, 16 coins set and 32 coin sets. Also the four kinds of young collector sets final mintage. I think basketball, baseball, swimming and soccer young collector set. Thanks.
