I was able to pick up a very nice 1996 gold 1/2 ounce coin tonight for spot. A guy had it for sell on classified ads and I was happy because I got it at spot. On my way home I was thinking, 1996 in the ASE is the lowest mintage of the series, how did the gold do that year. Is this a low mintage coin or is it normal.

That is an excellent price for a 1/2 oz gold eagle. Anytime that a person can buy a fractional gold eagle for spot gold is excellent considering that fractional gold eagle have premiums on them.

If memory serves it the 2nd lowest - 2001 is the lowest I know of. But I haven't followed them in years.

excellent condition, I don't see a contact mark on it. My guess 68 to 69 I lean towards 69.
