I was cleaning out an old shed yesterday and I found a tin with souvenir coins in it. Mixed in amongst the coins was this silver 1993 penny. It weighs 3 grams and it is magnetic. Anybody have any ideas about it?
3 grams is heavy for a zinc cent even with plating. You can't weigh things like coins on a food or postal scale. You need something a little more precise. It is around 100% that it is 2.5 grams and has been plated. You can keep it for fun, I have a few of these. But it isn't worth anything.
You need to be careful that the penny wasn't plated with mercury as it is very toxic. A lot of kids have done that in school science classes.
As always, photos are needed to make educated comments. Obverse and reverse, cropped to show just the coin, correctly orientated and in focus with good lighting. Oh yeah, and post them as FULL IMAGE and not thumbnail. As stated, you most likely have found a plated cent that was made magnetic by the material it was plated with.
