Die Deterioration issue. Common effect on Copper Plated Zinc Cents.

Normal for a zinc Cent. Minted from a worn out Die.

 

If you look above the T you'll see split plating. This is when the 8 micron thin copper plate is stretched too much and rips exposing the zinc core.
