Your beard looks weird sheila :wacky:

Looks like an over polished die I believe. Let's see if others confirm

Did you look for close AM on that 92?

It's a wide AM. Might be an over polished die. Very weird looking though.

Well I won't go there!! But if polished dies, wouldn't the polishing be into the fields and not on the details?

You.don't always see polishing lines on an over polished area. There could be none visible or they're so light thry aren't showing up.in the photo

Just saying - if that's polishing lines how does it stop so abruptly and not continue into the field?

Probably an over polished die that was "touched-up" in the engraving dept. Very nice find. Look how long Abe's neck is.

The mouth is almost gone as it is . I wonder if this type was discovered before ?

I have not found anything even close to it. That is why asked if anyone knew about the way that it looked. There does not seem to have any heavy polishing lines on it. If it is due to polishing, you would think you could some kind of polishing lines. But I just don't see any.

Abe looks younger than usual here. :)

I'm not sure if I'm fooling myself or what, but I think I can make out the outline of the full beard in the last pic. I'd be ok calling it overpolished based on what I see here.

The only thing that sticks out in my mind is why they'd repolish and "touch up" a die like this rather than just make a new one? They've got to have a rack of new dies ready at all time to keep up with production of 1000000000+ cents a year. My only guess is that maybe it was a proof obverse die that prematurely cracked.

Maybe the polish lines wore off the die .

Perhaps. Or maybe it was done so well no polishing lines were imparted.
