Here is your quote...sounds like a TV ad or news to me....sorry if I said ad and not news.
As for as my conclusion...that is the way it happends many times...someone finds a "error" and sells it as a RARE coin.....years later they find out that it wasn't an error just a grease filled die....now the people that got the coin as a RARE coin aren't wanting to lose money so they hype it up again.
We see it time and time again with State Quarters...someone finds a die crack or cud or something and sells it hyped up for $$$...then the buyer tries to sell it for that and doesn't get it so they in turn has to hype up the coin again and on goes the story.

I never said I had any proof...it is an idea and might be a good one....if you ever read the Error Coin Encyclopedia you will see that they also state that things like this happen---might be a good book if you have time to read it---I learned tons just from reading it.

I hate to kill your hopes....but anyone can write a website--you don't have to be an expert....someone could write a page to make their coin look great
As for the quote you gave....anyone can write that too.....I have seen no proof that the person that owns the page is an expert or even a coin collector.

I don't think I have said anything that would be slander....or a misquote...if you mean where I said TV ad that was a mess up and I'm sorry.
So far NO proof by you or anyone has been put in that there is a No Mintmark quarter from this time frame...or how to tell one from a grease filled die....I have found no info on the web or in book....

I would be glad too....what is the proof?....are there any more sites you can show that are alittle better than this one....one that is from someone who is known to know something in this type of collecting??

I would be more than happy to learn.

Sorry if I'm sounding rude...maybe that is how they are coming out when you read them...I'm not typing that way....I've looked at the photos...I've read the pages and the posts and the websites....and nothing shows anything other than a common grease filled die--If I'm wrong I'll glady say so.

Roy, can we see the full coin, heads and tails? I mean, if you looked at it under a 60X glass (which is like a microscope), and there's nothing there, it'd be very coincidental, indeed, if the mint mark was the only part of the die plugged. That tiny thing? I mean, come on. So, you might have the McCoy, here, who knows? And Speedy, now I can see why they call you Speedy. Not to slow of you to ask, how in the heck are they going to prove it? Heck, for that matter, I have a better one, a 1964-D that's missing the mint mark. Honestly, there's no mint mark on the back. So, that's a valid point you make. And Lawdog, heck, don't make me pull this car over. OK, he took you out of context, he was a little liberal. But we're not in a court of law. Give him a break, and listen to the point he makes. And the guys that are playing up this "specimen"...if you ask me, they ought to know better, if not, be ashamed of themselves. Because anybody can allege something similar about any coin. And, again, after all that said, Roy and this Potter guy might be right. But get out the electron microscope time, because the burden of proof is on them, the proponents. Sheesh!

Could just be a coin from a secret US Mint. If it is secret, there would be no Mint mark so you couldn't trace it. this allows people working there to collect a salary from our taxes and not have to let us know where the money went. Some coins have missing dates to confuse people also.
I think just filled die or is it dye or ????

    Hey Guys
Sorry again if I was too "Speedy"--after looking at the coin and searching out a few things I was pretty sure of my post....I haev written on a Error forum where some of the top name in the business post and they have yet to hear of such a thing as a 1988 Missing mintmark coin....after much searching on Google and such I don't see anything that points to there being a 1988 Missing Mintmark.
I would be glad to hear of such a thing and so would the Error dealers in this country.

You know...it might be from being around police all of my life that want the facts UP front and nothing left out....

I'm not even going to ask......if this is a grease filled die :D:D

It's not Ken Potter's site - the site in question is based in New Jersey, Potter is in Michigan. But it's pretty easy to ask the site owner about the coin - send him an email - webmaster@collectorscorner.org

If you do, you may wish to ask why this quarter without a mint mark isn't listed anywhere. At least not anywhere that I can find.

Hi all I just got an e-mail from Mr. Potter, the site is from the error hubby.
Ken said it is a minor error a filled die. So my mistake if I said it was from Mr. Potter's site.
    Have fun

Talk about responding without reading the original post.
Where do you see that as agreeing with "this Potter guy", or even asserting that I have an error other than filled die?'

I wasn't even sure that I had read somewhere about such a missing mintmark, and made an inquiry about it, not a statement.

Then, after Speedy raised the question of how to tell a true "missing mint mark" from a filled die error, I said:
It really wasn't my intent to start a war, so let's all kiss, make up, and agree that I have a coin from a grease-filled die, which will become the prize for a contest as soon as I figure out a good one to initiate.:D

Ok....no kissin here either....but in the spirit of not spoiling any more bowls of cornflakes, I'll let this one go too. As stated before, I do respect the collective knowledge of this board, and the specific knowledge of more than a few of you.

Speedy - my apologies for the toungue lashing. I've been searching for one of these since I was a kid....not to resell, just to have, but never stopped to think the coin through. Cheers.

Hate to have to be the one to have to point this out to you but when one chooses to entitle a thread "1988 Mintless quarter" and then proceeds to examine same under a 60-power microscope only to find no evidence of a Mint mark it can be reasonably inferred that one is presuming the existence of such a quarter. But hey, if you say I got that wrong, then sincerely sorry about that...my bad. But do let me know if you'd care to see a pic my 1964-D Mintless quarter...I mean, before you go ahead and make your bid on it. Of course, now feeling like I owe you one for this indiscretion of mine, I'll give you a great deal on it--promise! :D ;) :)

We're not going to keep on arguing. Since no one has offered any contest suggestions, I'll just have to come up with one on my own.
