1988 cent can someone explain what is going on with it ?

    I was thinking acid or something.But there's a lot of extra metal.

    Been in the ground or got hit with a good round of salt that melts the ice and snow up north!

    It is not extra metal it is from the zinc rotting under the copper coating making a gas bubble that causes the copper coating to be pushed up that makes it look like extra metal

    It's a galvanic reaction between the copper and zinc--the zinc loses.
    In 50 years, most 'zincolns' found in change will probably look like this.
