I have not been able to find any info on this penny. The coin is totally ruined on the obverse because someome poured acid on it, but the weight had me puzzled. I thought maybe it weighed 2.4 gr because of the acid, but the rim is still above the coin surface and it doesn't seem to have affected the surface height. The width is as wide as a 2.5 gr penny. The reverse seems to have a copper color showing through. Any ideas?? Thanks for any input.
Your Cent is a Copper Plated Zinc Planchet. That is not acid. It is Environmental damage. The reason it weighs less is because the Zinc has rotted and lost some of it's core. Damaged Cent
I have a 1988 penny that weighs 2.15 .can anyone tell me what this is.I'm not able to find anything on line. Thank you.
Damaged by the environment, like being in the ground for a month. No acid. It's made of zinc with a thin copper coating.
