Hey guys, Is this a mechanical DDO?..Or a natural DOUBLED DIE. As you can see, look at LIBERTY and the "D" mint mark. Let me know whats going on here with this penny. Thanks in advance.
It's only DDD Die Deterioration Doubling. Worthless doubling. There is no such thing as mechanical DDO. True DDO are not a striking issue it is a Die variety issue. Anything besides it such as Mechanical Doubling or Deterioration Doubling is mechanical. This happens when the coin is struck multiple times in the coining press. True doubled die coins are made from dies with the error on them. Double strikes may look similar, but they are not collectible or worth more than the face value of the coin. " closed quote
There is one class of doubling that breaks that rule though. That would be Single Squeeze Hubbing's error of Centrally Located Doubling. But as the name suggests, it mostly only affects the center of the coin. Even then, the community seems to be 50/50 on whether that's a true form of doubling, or just another form of MD. But yeah, I agree with the DDD.
