Hi There, Does anyone know what these "things" on the 1987 Canadian penny are? Suggestions would be most appreciated and thanks.
I'd have to agree with @Danomite that they appear to be stains or something on the coin. Maybe a soak in acetone would remove them and then you would know for sure.
Stains. 1-cent coins from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s are rife full of them. I suspect it was from improper washing or drying of the planchets. For modern 1-cent registry set players, they are extremely frustrating, as they definitely detract from the eye-appeal of higher grade coins. Here is an example: https://www.pcgs.com/cert/32775170
