OK...Welcome to my 2nd post on this site. :smile
please feel free to check out my other topic post 1992 Close Am Penny !

Anyways my father had 2 Rolls of 1986 Philadelphia Pennies stashed away.
He checked the price guide and knew that the Roll was worth $40.00
yet the pennies were worth $2.00 each. So then he noticed they booked
around $1,200 in High Mint State 67 or 68.
So he knew it was worth cracking both Rolls open knowing that
he bought the Rolls back in 1986 from a bank so the coins were "Mint State"

So we have 100 Mint State Pennies. they will all grade
    MS 66 RED - MS 70 RED without a problem !

This particular penny had a lower print run, and from what I'am told
that the pennies are tough to grade due to die hits to the stairs
and blistering effect problems with the dies.

Anyways after going through the pennies we noticed
a couple of pennies had mis-aligned die strikes.
The whole penny back (Monument Side) is not straight.
So if you were holding a penny with it perfectly straight and flip
it over you would see the Monument is not straight, its tilted !
    Mis-aligned Die Strike Error.
Anyways the Monument is tilted on a angle with it being off
20 - 30 degrees off from perfect centering.
We found 3 pennies like this....does anyone have any info
on this Die Strike ? Is it Rare ? Do I have the only copies ?

I can tell you one thing, I checked Ken Potter's error guide and
nothing was mentioned about mis-aligned die strike or
    off-centered errors in his book.

Also I checked NGC & PCGS price guide and grading population
and found no such coins listed under 1986 pennies.
No mention of values or coins graded with a Die-Strike,
    mis-aligned or off centered Varieties.

    OK Pictures

top left coin is a Perfect Condition Coin

top right & bottom coin shows the centering
of the monument being Off Centered by
    misaligned die strikes

Please comment below and let me know what you think
and share any knowledge you have about these 1986 P Pennies.

    THANKS !

It is not called a misaligned die. It is a rotated die, and you ordinarily won't find too great a premium for them unless they are rotated at least 90 degrees. Yours appear to be rotated about 40 degrees. You won't find any census numbers for it at NGC because it is classified as an error, and NGC doesn't separate errors in the census. I'm not sure where you got your pricing information, but the Red Book (which is normally high) doesn't even list a price for it at MS65 which means that it is worth 1c in that grade. There were almost 4.5 billion of them struck.

they did not mention high grade prices in our 2010 & 2011 books
but our 2009 price guide shows these as values for the 1986 coins.

    MINT STATE RED VALUES
    PHILADELPHIA MS 66 $11 MS 67 $25 MS 68 $1,200 MS 69 * MS 70 *
    DENVER MS 66 $20 MS 67 $50 MS 68 $125 MS 69 * MS 70 *

    * No Price Given

Then, I can only assume that the entry in your book was printed in error, because I got the information from the 2007 & 2008 books. Why would they not have that information in 2007 & 2008, publish it in 2009 and delete it in 2010 & 2011 if it wasn't entered in error?

I stand corrected. I just checked the Numismedia Price Guide at NGC:

    1986 MS66RD - $13.75; MS67RD - $43.75; MS68RD - $300

    1986-D MS66RD - $13.75; MS67RD - $37.50; MS68RD - $105

These prices, though probably high, are current.

I don't rely too much on PCGS prices. It smacks of tooting their own horn to sell their services to their Registry participants which only allows PCGS coins.

Only one U.S. cent in history has been graded MS70 and it was later degraded, plus very few have been graded MS69. I doubt that you're 1986 cent roll contains coins worth thousands of dollars; in reality, they are worth one penny each.

    Plus, from the OP, pennies:
-do not have a print run, they have a mintage.
    -they are NOT MS66-70. If you're lucky, you'll find a 65.
-they wouldn't be misaligned die strikes, they would be rotated die pieces.
-pennies aren't "copies," they are "pieces" or "coins", or even just "pennies" or "cents."
-PCGS and NGC do not list error varities. If you find an error, it would most likely be found on coppercoins.com or lincolncentresource.com

And why was it downgraded? doesn't make sense to grade something and then later change their mind. bad business practice!!

1986 did not have the two different varieties, all are the same, so just a normal 1986 cent.
