    I found a 1985P nickel that has the number 3 on the obverse twice and on the reverse once. The metal is not raised. I have never seen one like it and I have been searching my coins for the last 3 years. Any ideas?

    Maybe a counter stamp from a fair or something like that.

    Since there are hundreds of billions of coins in circulation, you could probably search another 50 years and be lucky to find another one at random.

    More than likely, this PMD was created by someone who was bored and had a number punch and hammer.

    Counter stamps are a thing of the past, unless the "artist" has made many of these, and it has a story, it's worth 5 cents.

    Yes, those are counter stamps, as said above;
    you'll never know the exact reason why someone
    punched those '3's into the coin - there are many
    possible reasons.
