I found this penny in my change. I googled it but got mixed results. No magnet sticks to it so it can't be steel. Hope someone can help me. William
Plated, but I seriously doubt it was electroplated. Either mercury or http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistryhowtoguide/a/goldsilverpenny.htm
It even looks like it may be spray painted with metallic silver paint. I have found a few of those in circulation.
Listen carefully.. There are no 1980's steel cents! If you read the first posts before yours.. it is called plating and it is done after it left the mint.
I would urge you to take photos and start your own thread. Like everyone else said here, with almost 100% certainty, you don't have a 1980's steel cent that was made at the US Mint.

They didn't miss it at "the factory". A photo and it's not on a dime planchet if it is the same size as the other pennies.
