Happens that "machine OR strike doubling" are the same thing, not different things, and that even a ten-year-old collector knows that. Can I give you a tip? Study what you want to look for first, look for it second.
The best way to learn and understand numismatic is to observe and study as many coins as possible. If you look back through the posts, members have linked a number of great error coin sites. Study the descriptions and pictures. It takes time, but the more you look at, the more you learn. Also, take every opportunity to read about the minting process. Many of the members of CT have spent years in the hobby and came by their knowledge through time and study. If anyone offers up obviously false information or tries to pass off screwball theories as facts, it gets corrected by others(sometimes nicely and sometimes it's not so nice). You received opinions from some very knowledgeable collectors. I understand that you are know to this and haven't determined who knows what they are talking about and who is full of you know what. But, since you admit you're new to the hobby, it might be a good idea not to jump on others if they don't give you the answer you want. You never know when you might need help again. Just my thoughts
Lol ... Wow . So filling people out that you don't know before you take their blank checks to the bank is not respectful to you or rational and I guess that I'm accusing the board of lying because i made a truthful comment about how alot off people in the coin circles are too quick to conclued that a coin is Machine Doubled or Strike Doubled without ever seeing the entire coin first .... Well in that case . OYYYYY !!! is absolutely right . And I see that it is time that I be the adult in this conversation and move on now . Infact . Has anyone seen the weather report for today . Oh and I also heard through the grapevine that publix has got some really amazing deals on sale for turkey burgers. Where shopping is a pleasure . Lol
You didn't make a "truthful comment", but a blind, self-serving, and very stupid one. Does one need to see the whole coin when photos are posted of, and a question asked, regarding a very specific area? Of course not, at least in this case; you're deflecting again, which seems to be par for the course. You simply didn't like what you were told, and instead of taking the "adult" route and attempting to prove the board wrong, or even trying to engage in intelligent debate, you decided to childishly accuse others of lying in order to get you to spend your precious nothing. No one expects you to take whatever is posted here as law or "to the bank", but that's not the real issue here. The onus is on you to prove your claims correct, and really is as simple as that.
That isn't true! A serif is a flourish at the beginning or ending of a letter, any letter. Here are some examples of split serifs from the IN GOD WE TRUST of a Kennedy half dollar. Chris
You do realize you're getting into rocket science territory now, right? That said, and not that I disagree in any way, but I think Jay was simply trying to help move a certain person away from using a term they don't understand.
You are 100% correct buddy. Just trying to get a point across, but I'm glad you pointed that out. False information is bad for the hobby. God knows enough floats around, lol. Thanks Chris.
No problem! As @BooksB4Coins might say, it wasn't really false information. It was just partially true. Chris
And look at those "serifs"! It's as if you've a magic coin! Incredible how your new buddy can magically find "varieties" in nearly every coin someone asks about these days, isn't it? Of course this isn't half as interesting as how you, when told what you want to hear, immediately lap it up without question. Perhaps you should dig up the thread where he once used "markers" from a completely different date to justify his "attribution" and see if it calls anything into question. I'll tell you what... send it to Mr. Wexler, and if it comes back as he claims, I'll pay for it.
All the discourse aside, let me assure you, that is machine doubling (same as strike doubling).... no doubt, no gray area.... fact.
Well ok fellas ... The verdict is out . According to these two coins shown here they are 100 % machine doubled and or strike doubled . And so if one or both coins " magically " comes back as something other then machine / strike doubled then I will be sure to share the findings and hopefully I will have learned a thing or two . But until then ... and in the mean time . Does anyone here happen to have any photos of machine doubled / strike doubled coins of this kind to show other pupils in the coin world how many different forms of strike and machine doubling there is ? Oh and I will greatly accept your offer Mr. Booksb4coins . And I will be in touch . Lol
Now moving along ... I also found some more very interesting coins that I have in my collection . Like 1943 DD steel cent. So does anyone have any clue as to what they might be worth ?
http://doubleddie.com/144801.html Put it to good use, pay close attention, and read carefully. Then, if you've any serious questions, I'm sure the board can further assist. This is also the website of the gentleman I suggested you send your coins to, so consider it a win-win.
Well thank you very much Mr. Booksb4coins . I do graciously appreciate it . Infact . I will look him up and see about having a few of the coins I have in my collection authenticated and attributed by him . And I will also try to put it to good use if I can . Although to be honest I think that Ive already seen and read this site that you've quoted along with a few others a long time ago during my research . But I'll check it out again to see if he has anything new on there now . In anycase thanks again .
Coins 1 & 4 are doubled dies with 100% certainty. 76 quarter is not 100% certainty. Coins 2,3, not sure. Coin 5 damage.
Oh and to steve.e ... I think your about right on the money . And I have yet to get the 76 and the Ozark Riverways Quarter pinned down yet . Infact the Ozark Quarter is very strange and unique and I'm still looking into that one. Especially with the extended tree branch and the letter A actually having an extended limb and different design from all the other Quarters of that date and mintage ... And what do you think that 76 is ... Machine doubling / strike doubling ?
