I have found this 1983 quarter with a marking underneath the L in Liberty. It seems like during the process something must have got into the dye to cause the marking under the L. I have searched to see if any other's like this are around, I can't find anything. I would truly appreciate your input, and if it's worth anything.

Pretty certain it is damage. The whole quarter is in rough shape which makes it even more likely to be damage. Appears to maybe have been run over by a car or two.

I'm wondering if it's worth anything, because it was damaged by the press. And people look for things like

I am not an error coin expert so please take that into consideration when I say I think the value is 25 cents.

What makes you think the coin was minted that way?

    It is post-mint damage.

But if you don’t agree with us, send it off to a grading company. We’re not always right. Should cost you $30 or so.

Look at all those other light hits and scratches

Can you please provide the certified origin what made all those other hits and scratches too?

Right it is damaged, it's damaged off the press

Even if it was made that way, what you would have is what is known as a struck through error. They are very common and generally add no value to the coin.

Okay, the gouge was a defect in the planchet when it was struck. The Mint used the planchet and created an error. This is common as the Mint uses metal and these errors just randomly occur. You have a genuine US Mint error. Congrats.

And to answer your question, it's so common it's worth a quarter. An error collector can get them out of change as easy as you did.
