Both philly and denver 1983 coppers have been found. I don't know if this is one or not, but it doesn't have any plating bubbles like on most early zincolns. Either weigh a pre 1982 copper cent and see if it is the scale or calibrate it and try again.
@Legacy3000 The color looks like a Copper Plated Zinc Cent Place the Cent on your scale and show us the picture.
Well then, it seems we are at an impasse. If this coin is actually what you think it is - it would be worth the small 10-15 dollar investment on buying a good digital scale that weighs to the nearest hundredth. This will become invaluable if you actually want to continue collecting coins when you inevitably find out that you do not have a copper 83 cent. Sorry to sound so harsh but odds are not in your favor. May I ask where you first learned of the coin in question?
Not looking to sell the coin my mother passed away and left me her collection I'm trying to start a collection for each one of my grandchildren. I heard about the 1983 D copper coin from my mother.
I am terribly sorry for your loss. If you ever need any advice or information on coin collecting, just know that you have chosen an excellent forum for gaining numismatic knowledge. I can not begin to tell you how much I have learned from being on here.
