I got one of these a while back...
Why are they worth so much?
    What condition is it in?
If it's worth more than $20, I will try to sell it here.
    Thanks,

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

They are only worth that much in the Red Book. Try looking at final sales in auction sites for the real value.
They are only worth more than a quarter when they are in the high MS grades.

IMHO, Your quarter based on the photos provided is worth 25 cents. The reason 1982 & 1983 coins are worth more and really only in higher grades such as mint state as your red book eludes to is because the US Mint did not issue mint sets for those years. So finding an uncirculated mint state coins from those years is very difficult unless you are prepared to pay for them. There are plenty of circulated 1983 p quarters out there such as yours and worth exactly 25 cents.

The mint did sell souvenirs sets at the mint only. But to purchase those now you will pay a premium. There were a few commercial companies around that also made sets but those are hit or miss sometimes, but are cheaper.
