Your kidding I hope when you said you "cleaned" it up? Cleaning a coin does NOT help it, but rather hurts the value in most cases....sometimes up to 50% of the value. Speedy
it's a 1983 .. not a 1915 Matte Proof. I cleaned it to remove the doubt about corrosion. Around the lower parts of the extra metal where it rest on the surface was alittle dark area and appeared to look like corrosion when I take pictures of it. it's nice and shiney now ( smile )
I agree with those who said it might be a chipped die or the beginning of a cracked die. I thought that before the second set of pictures.
I was shocked when I saw this thread and saw the pics.. I have an almost identical coin. Is it possible our coins could've been struck through the same cud or whatever caused the error? I will post pics tommorow morning!
And if that die was not pulled from service it could have matured to something like this 2005D; Or this 2007D;
