I didn't even think to weigh it. I just assumed it was zinc based on the date and the look of it. That is a good idea just in case though.
I'm not sure what mintmark, but I do know that there is ONE example of the 1983 copper cent. And one 1982 d copper cent just sold for 19,000
Some people know. Some people don't want to know. I figure if he didn't have a scale he would say so and I would explain away. But if you take something like a icepop stick, and a octagon shape pencil, put the pop stick on the pencil in the middle. Put the 83 coin on one side of the pop stick and a copper coin to see if the weight of the copper coin brings it up fast or just level. If it's level, the 83 is a copper. If the 83 goes up, it's zinc. Is this correct or am I wrong?
I get the logic and in theory it should work just fine, so long as you have a popsickle stick with consistent grain/density and you find 0 center of the stick. Nice work MacGyver.
Winner winner chicken dinner. Looks exactly like the one I tossed back in the pile a few years back. If you could just mail that back to me, I'd greatly appreciate it I'll even pay postage haha. Seriously though, congrats!
Okay, sorry to be a bother, but I'd like some opinions on a couple more things if you all wouldn't mind. I'm still new to a lot of aspects of the hobby and am not comfortable trying to grade a coin, I just know how much I like the look of them. So can you give me an estimate of what this might rate as? Also if it would be worth getting it professionally graded and encapsulated? How good of a job would a cardboard holder or airtite do of preserving the integrity of this specimen?
From the pictures provided, I would say your cent is in the AU range, I don't see any recent auction listings in this condition. Nice find,
