There are 2.5 grading services which are highly respected. All others should be taken with a grain of salt. The two best ones are NGC and PCGS. There is debate among collectors as to specific attributes about both, but they are essentially tied at the top tier. A close second to them is ANACS, which is why I said 2.5 instead of three. They are not quite as highly respected as the first two, but I've used them for a few less expensive coins. With your gold coin, PCGS and NGC are your only real choices. With both you have to pay for a membership to be able to send coins to them, or pay your dealer a premium. SHAMELESS PLUG: If you join the American Numismatic Association ($26 a year, I think, for digital delivery of the magazine and about $47 for a paper version) you automatically get submission privilges to NGC as part of your membership. That alone is worth it.
If you're sending your coin to NGC, it might behoove you to do as mac266 suggests, because there is a smaller number of people who you will have to trust your coin to. If you knew people that you trusted, this wouldn't be an issue, but since you've said that you don't, the smallest number of people would mean just you and NGC.
I prefer NGC for my gold. They seem to grade higher there which is a benefit for the seller but for the buyer? not so much.
Thanks, and I did join ANA over the holidays, but now that I am back to work stuff has to wait. I am going on vaca later in the month and will likely spend some time getting organized then. thanks again.
You're not sick until you use ALL of your vacay days to go to coin shows... , like I do. Oh, before you send to NGC as a new ANA member, call NGC first and get an account number. Old school. Telephone. The number is on their website www.ngccoin.com
Don't forget about their library! Now that you're a member you can check out books and have them mailed to you; all you pay is the shipping cost to return them! The card catalog (is it still called that in the digital age) is available online!
