Here is another, I will try not to post too many in 1 day. This was supposed purchased at auction for a large sum due to the D mint mark being doubled. I am interested if this is truly a double die and what the value may be? Also, is it possible for a mint mark to be in the wrong place? or is the mint mark part of the same die that makes the coin?
No. That is a plating issue. Zinc Rot is starting. Here is the information http://www.error-ref.com/zinc-deterioration-on-lincoln-cents/
Mintmarks wouldn't be doubled with the rest of the coin until 1990. The mintmarks were hand-stamped into the dies, not included in the hubs.
The correct numismatic terminology is actually Doubled die.. Explained here https://www-grandrapidscoins-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.grandrapidscoins.com/blogs/entry/what-are-doubled-die-coins?amp_js_v=a2&_gsa=1&format=amp#referrer=https://www.google.com&_tf=From %1$s&share=https://www.grandrapidscoins.com/blogs/entry/what-are-doubled-die-coins
So could this be a mint mark on the edge of this one? I thought the mint mark was part of the same die.
May be these are all just hopeful but I will try a couple more. This is 1990 half that looks like it may have a 1
Oh well. My son wanted this lot, I think he got screwed out of $300. It was part of an estate lot I bought locally before all the lock down and we never had a chance to look through the coins, probably about 300 coins in total.
