I apologize for the photos.. Still leaning.. I noticed something under the 8 in the date so I tried to clean the penny and probably messed it up.. I don't know if this is doubled die on all the letters or if it's supposed to look like this?? But, I do know that there is a faint unsidedown D mintmark directly below the 8.. I tried to enhance the first photo so you can see it.. What is it?? Thanks
@Candice Wise ...what you think is a backward D is a stain or damage... paredolia. There is no way that could be produced by the Mint. Go to doubleddie.com and read the section about How Dies Are Made....Spark
Just a random, co-incidental image among all the other accumulated wear. If it was a real MM it would be raised, (they were hand punched into the die until 1989, proofs until 1985) and is clearly not.
Okay.. Thanks.. I knew it was probably nothing.. But I had my mom and sister look at it and they saw it too.. They all said backwards D.. lol.. TY
@Candice Wise I see what you are referring to, and what your mom and sister saw, but it is just a coincidence that a mark or stain from circulation appears to be a backwards letter D. Keep up the hunt. For educational purposes, you might enjoy reading up on "Dropped letters" also. It would create an incused mark. https://coinauctionshelp.com/droppe...cavity,style found on the coin is struck into.
