I found this 1982 d penny, weighs 3.13 grams, which means its copper if I’m not mistaken. What do y’all think?
Yes, the coin is copper. The U.S. Mint made copper and zinc cents in 1982. The coin you're looking for is a copper one dated 1983....... And only a few are known.
Websites like Etsy sell 1982 small date cents for thousands of dollars.. But they are Philadelphia minted cents not Denver. So this confuses new collectors. It's really sad to see so much misinformation.
YouTube is the cesspool of Numismatics. Too many kids with zero (or close to zero) Numismatic knowledge spouting off to equally ignorant people what is valuable and what isn't. The blind leading the blind.
Yes, you have a 1982-D copper large date cent. It is a fairly common coin. The 1982-D copper small date cent, not so common.
Denver didn't make copper small date coins that year only zinc. Yours is a large date. 1 1982-D small date copper exists. A copper blank must have been left over in a bin of a million zinc blanks and got minted and discovered. Maybe another one will turn up since so many billions of coins were made that year, not all of the Denver small dates have been weighed.
Pre mid 1982 Cents were made of Copper except the 1943 Cent made of Steel. Post mid 1982 are made of Copped Plated Zinc Planchets. Copper - 3.11 grams Zinc - 2.5 grams A cheap gram scale is great to weigh the Cents. They go for around $10.00
I thought the same thing yesterday with one 82' I found but alas the "2" as in yours and mine is not curved in the line going to the base enough. The good news is I'm not an expert!
Thanks for your reply. Also can you tell the difference visually? I have noticed that the copper tarnishes while the zinc generally does not or has platting zinc markings.
drill in to it. Copper will continue to be all copper, and the zinc one will drill out whitish zinc. There's also a lot of Split Plating Doubling and general Zinc rot, bubbling, etc that happens with zinc cents.
However, I have found YouTube valuable for videos of the minting process. That's the only thing it's good for. Other than watching airplane and car crash videos!
Maybe they ought to put the US Supreme Court on camera, but ONLY over YouTube. It certainly couldn't make it any WORSE.
I have the red book and other books on coins. Just trying to help others who are having trouble with the difference in coins. Also have experts like Paddyman help out newbies and generate interest.
Does your copy NOT have the weights of various coins? "Give 'em a fish" vs. "teach 'em to fish"? You know the drill, right?
Can anyone tell me why this particular penny has dark brown streaks threw it? U can see it on the obverse side better then the back. It’s not because of circulation, I’ve looked into the deal of the penny and can tell it’s that’s not the case.
