I am weighing all of my 1982D pennies and all other 1982 pennies. They with weigh 2.2 or 2.3 which is a regular non copper penny. But when I weigh others, they weigh 2.9 not 6he magic 3.1. Even my older wheat pennies and coins before 1982 weigh 2.9g. Whats wrong?

I just began a new hobby, checking my coins. My focus was on 1982, 83, and 89 copper pennies with D mark. I even bought an electric scale and calibrated it. So most of my coins minted in 82 thru today are weighing in at 2.2g. However, a few 1982 have weighed in at 2.9. I weighed my older pennies and they weigh in at 2.9 or 3.0, none weighing the magic 3.11g. What's wrong?

I would guess your scale is off zero. It seems from your reading, that it measures only one digit behind the decimal, and perhaps rounding off. An older cent is within specs from 2.98g to 3.24 grams when new. Circulation can take off a very small amount also. Since most of your late coins are 2.2g, I suspect either 1. calibration wasn't done correctly or the calibration weight they provided is inaccurate -or- 2. the scale itself is internally inaccurate. Thanks for your insight. I didn't even think about wear and tear due to circulation. Well, would it be safe to say the pennies weighing 2.9 can be considered copper ones as opposed to zinc? It's closer to the 3.g. mark than the 2.2 g.

Although it seems logical, as a scientist type , I would get the scale working correctly first before making such a statement. :) Jim

Will do, I was supposed to use a gram weight, but I used something else because I didn't have the gram weight. That must be the problem! I'll correct the calibration ASAP.
I'm so glad I joined this website. This is my new retirement hobby. I will have 100 questions soon.

The zinc cents are all going to be right around 2.5g and the copper 3.1.

Ok, I think I didn't calibrate correctly. I was supposed to use a gram weight, but didn't have one. So I used something else that wasn't precise. I'll try to fix it. Thanks for your help

If you have artificial sweeteners in the kitchen, such as Equal, in the little paper pkg, it should say they contain 1 gram. Put a piece of paper on the scale , Tare the weight to zero, and add the contents of the bag, and calibrate it. Jim

Sounds smart, I was wondering where to by a gram weight. I'll try it tomorrow and let you know if it does the trick. Thanks again.

Well I decided to try and fix the scale tonite. Lo and behold I found the 100 gram wright at the bottom of the package the scale came in. Now THAT I'm in business, I have found what looks like a 1982 D penny that has a 3.1weight. Is it worth anything?

Depends on what kind it is. 1 small date 1982-D copper,
10 billion large date 1982-D copper.

    It's a small date. Worth a dollar?

No, it's not a small date.
    Look again.

(Oh look, it's this thread again. And again. And again. It's like a parody.)

Thanks for your input. I'm new to this, but I've looked and looked at this date and based on what's on the Internet, it looks like a small date. All three numbers align evenly at top and bottom, with the 9 slightly longer with a little curl at bottom. Wish I could take pic, but no way it will come out correctly.

It's not a small date 1982-D 3.1 gram copper cent.
You have no idea how many new collectors have come here over the years claiming to have this ultra-rare, one of a kind, speciman. It always turns out to be a large date or not copper. Always.
