Hey guys, I just found a 1982 cent, weighed it, and it weighs 2.5 grams. Now I am pretty sure it should be weighing 3.1 grams, yes?

CoinCorgi Tell your dog I said hi!

Why are you weighing them if you don't know what the weight is telling you?

It's a 1982 (P) large date copper plated zinc cent. Normal!

'82 was the year the switch to copper plated cents happened. Some of them were minted in copper while others were the so called "Zincolns." The plated ones weigh 2.5g. There were also the large and small dates and when you do all the combinations, you end up with 7 different types of '82 cents. (The 8th type is rare and will make you a gazillionaire.) The link Sal posted above has much more info.

That's why I didn't take the lengthy time to explain.

Thanks JeffC, that was very informative and I certainly do appreciate it! I will tell you that I know/knew most of what you mentioned about the 1982 cent....But I do forget a lot of stuff....I am almost 70 years old and fighting off Alzheimer....It does not have total control of me yet, but it is trying....But enough about me, again I thank you for your help!!

I hope you continue to stay mentally sharp. It's a cruel disease. Frustrating and annoying for the victim. Sad and emotionally trying for the loved ones and caregivers.
