1982 and 1983 lincoln penny weights???

    Good Day All

    Quick question. What are the normal weight supposed to be on a 19i2 and 1983 lincoln pennies?

    I have been weighing a few and a one 82 penny i found is weighing 2.5 grams? Thanks

    I found another 2.5.gram . Pics are beliow of each one with up close shot of date. I thought i read that the 1982 penny 2.5 gram has to be a small date to be worth something at this weight. But of course i cannot locate the resource.

    '82 was the year that the mint transitioned from 3.1 G copper pennies to 2.5 G copper plated zinc pennies. You will find both weights dated 1982.
    I'm sure someone will stop by soon to explain large/small date differences.

    Technically 3.11g +/- 0.13g for copper small cents.

    And 2.5 +/- 0.10g for copper/zinc

    Those are zinc. Copper 82's are 3.11 g

    I still think it's .13 even for the zinc.
    Let me know if they changed that.


    31 U.S. Code § 5113 - Tolerances and testing of coins
    (a) The Secretary of the Treasury may prescribe reasonable manufacturing tolerances for specifications in section 5112 of this title (except for specifications that are limits) for the dollar, half dollar, quarter dollar, and dime coins. The weight of the 5-cent coin may vary not more than 0.194 gram. The weight of the one-cent coin may vary not more than 0.13 gram.

    The 1982-D small date copper cent, weighing 3.1 grams is the one that's worth some money. Happy hunting.
