1979 dollar coin error?

Found this earlier, is missing letters and need expert help if this is error or damage.

It appears to be a Struck Through issue.

As others said, it's a filled die/struck through and is a mint error. Unfortunately, it probably only carries a small premium above face value, but it's still a really nice find

how does something like that actually happen during the striking process ?

 

machinery grease, or similar material,
gets on the die.

 

Thanks. that's a lot of grease to fill up 6 large letters. I haven't seen it that large of area before. I was thinking someone filed the letters away trying to make some hobo dollar of some type.

 

I thought that at first but it doesn't look like it. Tje die covered most part of the round shape.
