1978 Quarter with 3 layer mint mark

  1. Sorry this is the best picture I can get. Mint mark ends up being filled in but there are 3 layers to get there.

Looks like a die chip inside the D.

  4. Guessing it has to be a D mint.

No guess work. It is a D mintmark.

Die chip filling the mintmark, and the mintmarks has received contact damage as well.

I also have a 1978 quarter with some noticeable issues can anyone explain what they see wrong with it?

The circular on the obverse is damage from a coin rolling machine.

So is it just regular old damage?

That's it! Regular old damaged. We see a lot of coins with this type of circular damage. Very common.

I was actually wondering if anyone would see what appears to be 2 Letter I in liberty..but I guess I'm seeing things... if you see it what terminology is used for that kind of damage?

It's also damage. Notice all of the hits and dings in your coin. This is just another ding. Many times, if the coin is worn and damaged, anything unusual will usually be the result of that wear and damage.

The more you learn about the minting and die making process, the easier it will be to spot true errors and varieties. It takes time, but many of the members have been doing this decades.

It took a hit so it's damaged.

It is considered rude to highjack someone else' post. Start your own post and you'll get more attention.
