1978 penny weighs 2.79 but isn’t silver

    Because it sat somewhere that was corrosive. Probably underground. That thing is beat up.

    I didn't think any Cents were silver. Steel, yes. Zinc, yes but otherwise copper. It's damaged from the environment so it weighs less as some netal has been eaten away.
