Its a strike through no doubt about it, his face is pretty sunk in from the garbage that fell on the die ...
I'm with the strikethrough crowd. It looks like grease & debris that built up in a shallow recess of the die fell off and was struck into the planchet. When I searched a $50 Mint bag of 1980, I saw dozens similar to this. Chris
I have that same pattern on a few old Wheats. I'll see if I can dig up a picture and post it. I'm pretty sure that's a definite something-or-other.
The reverse looks normal. So it must be a lamination issue as it is in a straight line. Thanks for the image.
Just wondering.. I also see 2 anomalies (for lack of a better word) at both ends of the rim. They are in line with the gouge in question. Rick I hope you don't mind I snipped your image.
Well everybody I also posted this coin on Coneca forum, and Mr. Potter also think its a Strike Through too . Heres the link to this coin on Coneca forums http://board.conecaonline.org/showthread.php?t=4395
Rick, I'm going to dig up one of mine and post it here. It's an old Wheat, but it has a similar marking. I'm thinking it might go to identification of what this was this die struck. Think you'll find it interesting. Give me a few, I have the picture in another computer.
