1978 Copper Washington Quarter

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by Michele Bigness, Aug 31, 2016.

  1. Sharing my recent find. At first, I thought it was stained and beat up. Pictures provided at various angles and lighting. The obverse appears to be heavily scratched but hard to say of machine or by hand with everything else going on. Also took an older quarter to compare the edge.

    As always, comments are welcomed. 20160831_175555.jpg 20160831_175602.jpg 20160831_175721.jpg 20160831_175413.jpg 20160831_180213_HDR.jpg

I agree with @green18. Looks like a metal detecting find. Environmental damage.

The reeding appears 'eaten up' to me........

  13. hmmm... For starters

    Obverse
    The B in Liberty
    The date..between the 9 and 7
By the missing design element in the L in Liberty with a triangle and between the L and I ...above NW of liberty on the rim (2nd image)

  15. Reverse
    DOLLAR ..

    and its copper not dirty
If u look at the scratches on obverse.. They are copper

Anyway..that's what I see. Is it only obvious to me? lol

  16. Rick...pretty cool coin. Tnx for sharing.
I did do my homework and 78 was an interesting year for quarter errors .. Including multi-errors like the one I posted. Rare..but a few have "surfaced" lol

What type of error would you call this?

  18. I have no idea. It could be plachette but I need to verify with an expert

Did you weigh it? That will help you know what it is.

  20. no, i don't have a scale (yet) but that is a great idea.

Finding PCGS coin graders in Richmond, VA has been an issue, as well...for the past several years of looking into a loop, I have about a 100 coins that need expert eyes and certification.

Ya, I think your right, when I metal detect different soils the ph can mess with the coins, but I hope for him he got something
