Hi Everyone, My dad told me about a coin he found at work a couple weeks ago and said it looked like it was struck through cloth. I didn't believe him but when he sent it to me today I must say I was surprised. It certainly seems to have been struck through a piece of cloth. Tell me what you think. It's a shame that a CRHer marked the reverse with a sharpie. Would acetone take that off? Does it have enough value to warrant even trying to get it off? Thanks for looking!
Pretty sure that effect can be created with a vice, a piece of cloth, and some strong arms. But I'll wait for the experts to chime in. I also think that acetone would remove the marker. Edit: I stand corrected. Nice find!
Nice find! IMO, definitely struck through a scrap of cloth. I see no evidence that it is a vise/press job. A very short soak in acetone will take the ink off of the coin.
Looks good to me. A acetone bath won't hurt it so give it a whirl It's funny that a silver searcher would pass this bye as it is/was worth more than if it was silver.
Thanks guys! Are these fairly common? I did a quick ebay search and didn't come up with anything like it. I have no idea the approximate value of something like this.
First. .acetone in q- tip will take sharpie right off...I do it all the time.. second....neat error....keep it...If not I would like to have it.bi have went through 300000 halves and never seen anything like it. Nice find.
Wow! That's a nice one! I have a few in my collection mostly cents and dimes with struck through cloth but I have never seen a Kennedy. Love it. I would place a price of $30-$50 dollars raw. Maybe a little more for a serious collector.
Cool, thanks! I have a few struck through die caps and other little random things but this is my first one struck through cloth.
Also. I read somewhere how this happens. At the mint sometimes they have to wipe down the machine and dies with a piece of cloth. Don't know how but a piece rips off and gets caught in the process and that is how we see this type of error. I will look for the article.
