Go to google and type in "silver and gold penny experiment". You will get lots of references, some with pictures (could also try the "images" button in google).
Kentucky - Great pics of your HS class science project, AND, I think you have probably provided the definitive answer to this minor mystery. Jack
I just found one too! exact size of a penny, 1975 and silver..... VERY shiny! any experts have a theory as to why there are several out there?? it can't just be a science project, that would be odd...
Some of us do science projects specifically because they're "odd". If one student can easily turn a cent silver, why wouldn't lots of other students do the same thing over time? I think it would be odder if there weren't several of them out there. Welcome to CoinTalk!
Show pictures of an entire coin front and back. Not just something of something that you want us to believe is a coin. And you could always start your own thread instead of using a 10 year old one.
Not sure it's needed. I've never seen a clearer example of a coin surface eaten away by acid or some other corrosive agent. With that much damage, I'm surprised it hadn't lost even more weight.
I to have a 1975D silver penny in amazing condition and unable to find out anything about it. It weights 3.25. Grams I've turned a lot of copper to "silver and gold." When copper is boiled with zink and sodium hydroxide the zink bonds to copper making it appear silver then when heated with a flame turns it to bronze and appears as gold pennies work very well with this. However this is not zink
Welcome to CT. So, do you think somehow that is a real silver penny? Consider the weight of a cent should be 3.11 g +/- 0.13 g. If it were silver, it would weigh a lot more. I have one that is chrome plated, have never bothered to weigh it.
It's almost certainly plated with silver, or chrome, or nickel. Can you post photos? Also, you'll have better luck if you start a new thread for your coin. Welcome to CoinTalk!
I know this a very old thread but I’m new to the group and don’t see a way to make a new post yet. I’ve got the same coin I think. Silvery 75 with no mint mark in very nice condition. Sounds like I need to weigh it?
