While working on bronze cents of this date today I found 2 out of 22 that were keepers...both AU58 Red. However, while checking the others before sending them to the spend pile, I found one with an anomaly. Follows are the full images: Now a medium shot of the reverse where the anomaly is. The next shot is the highest magnification I can go with my scope, using its' internal ring light: As you can see above the anomaly appears to be maybe a die crack but maybe not. The anomaly appears to be a surface imperfection of the planchette that, when struck, carried thru and remained affecting the lower T and the upper A... the crack in the A is not a die crack. The next and final pic is one using a pen light shooting up underneath the scope from about one o'clock: Just a final shot to give a different perspective. Please comment with expertise. I think I'm on the right track here but I always honor facts that prove me wrong. I hope everyone enjoys the post...imo...Spark
Some sort of strange zig zag lamination possibly. Maybe a minor strike through of a piece of thread or a metal shaving. Most metal shavings come off in spirals. A spiral when pressed will turn into a zig zag…
I don't think this is a lamination. It looks to me like a planchet with a jagged void that became squeezed together when the coin was struck.
Notice on the obverse, directly behind the subject anomaly, there is a small lamination. It may be related to the reverse issue.
I would think no matter what caused it, it would be called a small lamination issue. One think that sucks about these latter years of the 70's, there really aren't any attractive toners.
Appears to be struck-through, the damage extends across the devices. Since the coin is not MS, most likely it's just strange PMD. Odd things happen!
Thanks everyone for all the input. I had thought of lamination and struck-thru so members who responded this way are okay in my book. I had also thought PMD as well, but the retention of cracking made me go with a surface problem. The bottom line is I’m way okay with all of these as possibles cuz crazy things do happen @BadThad …and it really does look like a strike on a very minor lamination issue. I’ve put it in a flip as an example knowing it is NAV…Spark
