Can somebody please tell me what the deal is with this 1974 washington quarter? In the words In God We Trust. There seems to be a"Y" at the end of trust,Trusy. Is this a known error? How could this mistake have happened? Please any info on this coin would be highly appreciated.
Welcome, again, @jayden. Again, it looks as if your coin took a hit to the word "TRUST" and moved some of the metal on the coin AFTER it left the Mint. There is no way that a die was designed with the word "TRUST" misspelled, that the die passed inspection, was used to strike coins and that no coin quality control person caught it. Nope. Not an error made at the mint. I think @paddyman98 has a fun little sub-collection of these.
Now that is certainly different, to say the least. What kind of "hit" would cause that? Maybe someone used a tool and did it on purpose?? It's very hard to believe that happened at the mint.
It's definitely a hit on the letter T Om Cents it happens on the T in LIBERTY so I named it the LIBERYY Enigma. Here is my old thread - https://www.cointalk.com/threads/the-liberyy-cent-enigma.309022/ There is absolutely no reason for the US mint to change the letter T into a letter Y on the Die. So by reason of deduction it is damage.
I agree with my esteemed colleagues who have said the "T" took a hit, but I really like your quarter @jayden! I'd keep it for sure, even though it isn't a recognized error. Steve
The top center of the T took a hit and was pushed downward giving it its current appearance. Neat looking.
And lest us not forget ... The R is missing the top, kinda looking like a "K" The U is missing a chunk and the S is messed up too IN GOD WE TKUSY
